Nowadays, you can’t scroll through social media without seeing one of your favorite celebs on their way to a workout class. While spinning and Zumba are still extremely popular workout classes among the health conscious, it seems as though more and more people are making their way to yoga or pilates classes. They get their sweat on, they give their body a workout, and they come out of the class feeling so much better in themselves. However, have you ever wondered what the difference is between yoga and pilates? While they are fairly similar, they are also very different.
The differences in history
One of the main differences between yoga and pilates is the fact that their histories are wildly separate. While yoga has been around for thousands upon thousands of years, pilates is a relatively modern invention. In fact, the history of yoga stems back so far nobody actually knows when it first came to origin. What we do know is that it was created in India around 5,000 years ago to connect people to their unconscious mind and their sacred bodies. On the other hand, pilates was created in 1925 by a man called Joseph Pilates. He founded the concoction of exercises and movement to help those going through physical therapy and rehabilitation, and it’s only recently become a modern workout trend.
The differences in equipment
As if that wasn’t enough, yoga and pilates are also extremely different in terms of the equipment required for the process. Yoga normally just relies on the body and the motivation of the individual, but this practice also requires a yoga mat, and sometimes additions such as blankets, blocks, and straps. If you have ever been to a pilates class, you’ll know that there is even more equipment thrown into the mix. In fact, the main bulk of a pilates class takes place on various different machines, such as the cadillac, the spine corrector, the reformer, the small barrel, and more. These machines all come with pulley systems that work various different aspects of your body.
The difference in technique
While many people get yoga and pilates confused, there are some major differences between the two of them. This includes the difference in technique because these two workouts couldn’t be further away from each other. Yoga is an extremely spiritual and meditative practice and relies on the openness and the control of your mind. A yoga class normally involves breathing exercises, and meditative practice to help you on the path of enlightenment. However, pilates leans more towards the scientific side of exercise. It’s used to help those with bad posture, to help align bodies, and to help work areas of their body that they might not necessarily get to work.
There are so many differences between yoga and pilates, but that doesn’t mean that one is better than the other. In fact, each class has its positives, and all of them come with various aspects of practice that appeal to others. Of course, they both have their health benefits.
